Soncoya

Soncoya

This tree is of small to medium size, typically growing to a maximum height of 6 to 10 meters (20 to 33 feet). It is deciduous and features leaves covered in fine hairs, along with large, highly aromatic flowers. Its pollen is released as permanent tetrads.
The fruit is spherical, measuring 15 to 20 centimeters in diameter, and possesses a velvety-textured brown skin that becomes tough to open when fully ripe. The fruit's surface is adorned with hook-like projections, containing numerous seeds with a germination period ranging from 1 to 6 months. These trees usually require 1 to 3 years to start bearing fruit and can be cultivated in containers. This species shares close genetic ties with the cherimoya, sugar-apple, and other Annonas. However, the soncoya remains relatively obscure among Annonas, as its fruit is considered of mediocre quality and has not gained widespread cultivation. The fruit's texture is reminiscent of the soursop, with some describing it as stringy or fibrous.
