Mamey Sapote

Mamey Sapote

Mamey Sapote, also known simply as Mamey or Pouteria sapota, is a tropical fruit tree that is native to Central America and Mexico. The tree produces a large, oblong-shaped fruit with a rough, brown outer skin and a sweet, creamy, orange-colored flesh inside. The flavor of the fruit has been described as a combination of pumpkin, and sweet potato.

Mamey Sapote trees typically reach a height of 50 to 60 feet and require a warm, tropical climate to thrive. The fruit is often eaten fresh, but can also be used in smoothies, desserts, and ice creams. In addition to its culinary uses, the fruit is also believed to have some health benefits, such as being high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

The two primary cultivars of mamey sapote in Florida are 'Pantin' and 'Magana', which together account for 95-98% of the acreage dedicated to growing the fruit. 'Pantin' is the most widely planted, followed by 'Magana'. Since different cultivars produce fruit at different times of the year, planting a combination of three to four cultivars, such as 'Tazumal', 'Pace', 'Magana', and 'Pantin', may be sufficient to ensure a year-round supply of mature fruit.
