Grimal Jaboticaba

Grimal Jaboticaba

The fruit, which has very dark purple, almost black skin, is known as the Grimal and is larger than the Sabara variety. Its name honors Adolph Grimal, a renowned botanist. The fruiting of this particular variety can occur relatively early, with some trees producing fruit in as little as four years, although it usually takes between five to seven years from seed. If planted in the ground, the tree can grow to exceed 15 feet, but this may take more than 20 years. While some trees of this variety have produced up to four crops in one year, there are usually only two to three substantial crops. Additionally, it is not as pH-sensitive as some of the other varieties.
